Pay garment workers by tomorrow: state minister for labour
The government today asked the garment factory owners to clear the payments of workers' salaries, bonuses and other dues by tomorrow so that the workers can enjoy the Eid-ul-Fitr.
Begum Monnujan Sufian, state minister for labour and employment, gave the instruction at a tripartite meeting with the factory owners, union leaders and government high-ups at Srama Bhaban in Dhaka.
The scattered incidents of labour unrest have been taking place over the last few days in different industrial areas demanding arrears and longer holidays during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
However, Sufian said the holidays for Eid is three days and the workers will have to stay near their workplaces to contain the spread of Covid-19.
In consensus with the factory managements, the workers can extend the time period for Eid holidays, the state minister said in a statement issued from the labour ministry.
