Officials of Chattogram Custom House recovered 82 gold bars weighing 9.5 kilograms worth around Tk 5.64 crore in Shah Amanat International Airport yesterday morning.
The officials detained Enamul Haque, of Chattogram's Chakaria upazila, in this connection, said Rokhsana Khatun, deputy commissioner of Chattogram Custom House.
On information, custom officials searched the body of Enamul who came from Dubai by a flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines that landed at the airport at 7:30am.
Rokhsana Khatun said the gold bars were tied with tapes inside his shirt.
"The total weight of recovered gold bars was 9.512 kg and the market price of the recovered gold bars was estimated as Tk 5.64 crore," she said, adding that Enamul frequently travelled to Dubai and he was handed over to Patenga Police Station in the city for further legal action.
The seized gold bars would be deposited to the Bangladesh Bank exchequer while a departmental case would be lodged under customs act, she added.
