Six to die for murder of 4 of a family
A court in Kurigram yesterday handed death penalty to six people for killing four members of a family, including two children, in Diadanga village of the district's Bhurungamari upazila in 2014.
Judge Abdul Mannan of the District and Sessions Judge Court delivered the verdict, Public Prosecutor Abraham Lincoln told The Daily Star.
He said the six convicts handed the death sentence included Mamtaz Uddin, brother of one of the victims Sultan Mia. Besides, one of the convicts is absconding, he said.
The court, however, acquitted the seventh accused in the case, said the PP.
According to the case statement and court sources, a group of masked assailants stormed Sultan's home in Diadanga village on the night of January 14, 2014 and hacked Sultan, 57, his wife Hazera Begum, 44, and their granddaughters Romana, 8, and Anika, 10, to death with sharp weapons.
Sultan's son Hafizur Rahman filed the case against the seven with Bhurungamari Police Station the next day.
The case statement says Mamtaz had a land dispute with his younger brother Sultan and he hired the other accused for Tk 5 lakh to kill the victims. Mamtaz also promised to give them one bigha of land after the execution of the "killing mission", the statement says.
PP Lincoln said the verdict was pronounced after the charge sheet was filed in the case. He hailed the judgment and hoped that it would be executed soon.
The six given death penalty are Mamtaz, Nazrul Islam Majnu, Amir Hamza, Zakir Hossain, Jalal Gazi and Hasmat Ali. Of them, Jalal is a fugitive. Accused Nainul Islam has been acquitted in the case, added the PP.
