Criminals pick up student

Three criminals posing as DB police picked up a university student from Elephant Road in the capital and robbed him of Tk 4 lakh yesterday.

Parvez Rana, 25, a LLB student of a private university in Dhanmondi, was picked up after he drew the money from a bank on Elephant Road around 1:00pm.

Labelling Parvez was a drug dealer, the criminals handcuffed Parvez and forced him to get into a private car. After roaming around different areas in the capital, they dropped off Parvez in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area around 2:00pm, said the victim's brother Uzzal Hossain, a staff at the audit department in Kakrail.

Uzzal told The Daily Star that he sold a piece of land at Godagari in Rajshahi. The buyers paid by cheque for the land and he then sent it to his brother's account to cash the cheque.

He said he went to the bank and requested the authorities to show him the CCTV footage to see whether anybody followed Rana near the branch.

Uzzal said the criminals beat up his brother.

Inspector Mozammel Haque, in charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, told this correspondent that the victim had been treated at the DMCH. He said police were investigating the incident.

On April 2, an official of Drik gallery went missing and was found dead in the bushes beside Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road at Jalkuri of Narayanganj after he withdrew Tk 3.08 lakh from a bank in Dhanmondi.

The dead, Mohammad Irfanul Islam, 48, was an accountant and admin officer at Drik Picture Library Ltd.

ANOTHER ABDUCTED    

A group of people in plainclothes abducted a student from a mess in Rangpur city yesterday, reports our correspondent there.

Abdullah Al Mahmud, son of Hazrat Ali of Pangsa upazila in Rajbari, is a first-year student of political science department at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur.

Quoting Mahmud's messmates, Shaheen Islam, acting proctor of the university, said around 4:00am, some 14-15 people went to the mess at Sarderpara and introduced them as Detective Branch of police and picked up Mahmud.

Shaheen said on information, he talked to Rangpur Kotwali Police Station about the matter. Police said they did not know anything about the incident.

After the incident, Mahmud's mobile phone was found switched-off.

ABM Jahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said police were looking into the incident.
