45 more fishermen jailed in 3 districts
Forty-five more fishermen were sent to jail for netting mother hilsa in the Bay and different rivers in Patuakhali, Bhola and Chandpur districts yesterday and the day before.
Our Patuakhali correspondent reported that mobile courts sentenced 16 fishermen of Kalapara and Dashmina upazilas to jail on Monday evening for catching hilsa in the Bay and Buragourango and Tentulia rivers, defying ban imposed on October 5. The ban will go tomorrow.
In Kalapara, a mobile court arrested nine fishermen while they were fishing hilsa in the Bay on Monday evening. The court also seized two trawlers and around 20,000 metres nets during the drive.
All the nine fishermen are from Moudubi village under Rangabali upazila of Patuakhali district.
In Dashmina, seven more fishermen were sentenced to one year's imprison on charge of netting hilsa in Buragourango and Tentulia rivers. The arrestees were produced before a mobile court that punished them at around 6:00pm.
The mobile court also sized two trawlers and 300 metres nets that were destroyed with fire.
Our Correspondent from Bhola adds: 14 fishermen were arrested and 30 other fined for catching hilsa in the Meghna River yesterday.
Of the arrestees, seven were sentenced to jail for one year, two for two months and five for 15 days.
Pritish Kumar Mollick, district fisheries officer, said law enforcers arrested the fishermen from Shibchar, Mongol Sikder, Hakimuddin, Ramdaspur, Shibpur and Tulatoli points of the river.
In Chandpur, 15 fishermen were jailed for one year each for catching hilsa in the Megna yesterday, reports our correspondent.
Additional District Magistrate Masud Alam Siddique said a mobile court arrested the fishermen during a drive in the river from 6:00am to 8:00am.
