219 held in 4 districts
Law enforcers in overnight drives detained 219 people including BNP-Jamaat activists in different areas of four districts including Dhaka on different charges.
The joint force comprising police, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel nabbed 120 people in Dhaka, 35 in Comilla and four in Chittagong while police arrested 52 people in Jessore, eight in Chittagong, reported our correspondents.
The combined force raided different areas including Kalyanpur, Kafrul, Shewrapara in Mirpur between 12:00am and 6:00am and arrested 120 people.
The law enforcers arrested them in connection with different criminal charges, said Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
The joint force arrested four opposition activists raiding different areas of Sitakunda upazila in connection with different charges including recent incidents of violence in the area.
Besides, police also nabbed eight persons in Satkania an Lohagora upazilas.
Police in overnight drives arrested 52 people including 16 activists of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.
Law enforcers also recovered 10 crude bombs during the drives in all the eight upazilas of the district, said Reshma Sharmin, assistant superintendent of police in Jessore.
Thirty five leaders and activists of BNP, Jamaat and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, were held between 12:00am and 6:00am in connection with recent sabotage in the district.
The law enforcers conducted drives at Laksam, Monohorganj and Sadar upazilas and arrested the 35 opposition men, said Ali Ashraf Bhuiyan, additional superintendent of police in Comilla.
Of the arrestees, 12 Jamaat-Shibir men were held in connection with setting fire to the office of Laksam Upazila Nirbahi officer yesterday, the police official said.
