DCC to rename 5 roads after Liberation War heroes

The Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) has taken an initiative to rename five city roads after five sector commanders of the Liberation War to introduce the great freedom fighters to the new generation.

The DCC as part of the initiative yesterday renamed the road from Panthapath-Sonargaon crossing to Russell Square as Bir Uttam Quazi Nuruzzaman Road after Col (retd) Quazi Nuruzzaman, Bir Uttam.

Nuruzzaman unveiled the name plaque at 5:30pm at the crossing in presence of DCC Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka and State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Md Rezaul Karim, among others.

Nuruzzaman said he was fortunate to be honoured as a freedom fighter, appreciating the steps of the DCC mayor that include a reunion of the freedom fighters.

The recent step was taken to "honour the greatest children of the soil" for their glorious role in the Liberation War, said the mayor.

Earlier on Sunday, the DCC renamed the link road from Mohakhali crossing at Jal Khabar to Gulshan Circle-1 as Bir Uttam AK Khandaker Road after another sector commander AK Khandaker, Bir Uttam.

Renaming of three other roads are on the cards after sector commanders MA Rabb, Bir Uttam, Shawkat Ali, Bir Uttam and CR Datta, Bir Uttam, DCC sources said.

Other valiant freedom fighters will be honoured in the same manner, the sources added.
