Pay commission tenure extended till Jan 31

The government has extended the tenure of the National Pay Commission up to January 31, from its previous January 9, on the grounds that the upcoming South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) summit will slow down its work.

The Pay Commission formed in last July following an announcement by Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman during the budget session started functioning from September.

The pay commission is already working on five different models of salary structure for government

employees and is ready to present its recommendations to the government in mid-January, sources said.

However, during the Saarc summit, the government will not be able to pay attention to its report and therefore extended the commission's tenure.

The commission will first send its report to the finance ministry who will form a committee to scrutinise it and supervise for its fast implementation, effective retrospectively from January 1, 2005.

Government employees are now paid in 20 different salary grades.
