Indian CBI arrests BSF officer in connection with cattle smuggling
India's federal anti-corruption agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), today conducted searches at 13 locations spread across five cities, including Kolkata, and booked a serving BSF officer in connection with cattle smuggling along the border with Bangladesh.
The agency carried out the searches in Kolkata and Murshidabad in West Bengal state, Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, Amritsar in Punjab and Raipur in Chhattisgarh, CBI officials said.
BSF commandant Satish Kumar has been booked by CBI along with three others -- Inamul Haq, Anwarul Sheikh and Mohammed Golam Mustafa -- in connection with the case, they said.
Kumar, who was earlier a Commandant of the 36th BSF battalion, is now posted in Raipur, the capital city of India's heartland state of Chhattisgarh, and the others over cattle-smuggling along the border.
The CBI raids were continuing when the last reports came in.
The Bangladesh-India border along West Bengal is the longest international border of any Indian state. Out of the 4,096 km long the border, West Bengal alone shares 2,216 km with Bangladesh.
The border, particularly in West Bengal, is also one of the most porous.
