Pirojpur malta farming sees great success

Finding no job after his graduation, Amalesh Roy, now 52, decided to try his luck at farming on his father’s land in Pirojpur.

He used to farm coconut and betel leaf on his land but that was not enough to earn a living.

Heeding advice from his cousin, Amalesh planted malta on his farmland.

“As my cousin advised me that malta farming is very profitable. I visited many places to gather knowledge on malta fruit farming,” Amalesh Roy said.

Three years after planting malta on his farm, he started to harvest the fruit which saw a great demand in the local markets.

Amalesh grows malta plants through grafting system, and farmers from nearby areas buy them from him.

A kilogramme of the fruit can be sold for upto Tk 140.

There are 154 malta orchards in the district on 34.66 hector of land, sources at the Pirojpur Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said.
