UK envoy meets Ashraf
A day after meeting opposition leader Khaleda Zia, British High Commissioner Robert Gibson met with Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam at his residence in Dhaka in what is believed to be an attempt to break the prevailing political deadlock.
The British envoy talked with Ashraf, also the LGRD minister, for 50 minutes till 3:40pm, a source told The Daily Star.
After the meeting, none of them agreed to talk to the media.
Gibson went to Islam's Bailey Road house in the capital at 2:50pm.
Other details were not available immediately.
Gibson called on BNP Chairperson Khaleda at her Gulshan residence yesterday evening.
Khaleda's advisers Reaz Rahman and Sabihuddin Ahmed and BNP Vice-Chairman Shamser Mabin Chowdhury were present at the meeting.
Contacted for comments, a spokesperson for the UK high commission said: "Having returned to Dhaka, the high commissioner is meeting senior leaders of the two parties today and tomorrow to get an update on recent developments, including Khaleda Zia and the foreign minister earlier today."
