Protect Mro people from eviction: International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs
International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA) today expressed concern for and solidarity with the Mro communities facing threat of eviction from their ancestral lands, as well as other human rights violations.
They demanded immediate abandonment of the construction of a luxury hotel on the Chimbuk-Thanchi route, protection and development of the lives and livelihood of "indigenous" people in line with Bangladesh's commitment in its constitution, international human rights law and establish a constructive dialogue with the indigenous Mro communities and their representative organisations regarding their concerns.
IWGIA in an open letter to Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing, minister of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, said villagers of the Mro community face eviction threats from eight of their ancestral villages at Chimbuk hill in Bandarban due to the construction of a five-star hotel in their ancestral lands.
The construction of the luxury hotel will effectively destroy the social, economic, traditional and cultural fabric of the Mro community. Mro villagers have no other way to survive without this land, the letter added.
