Thousands of people suffer as bridge collapses in Jamalpur
Thousands of people of about 20 villages have been facing serious problems as a bridge on a river in Jamalpur's Sarishabari upazila collapsed around midnight yesterday.
A portion in the middle of the 200-metre-long bridge at Shuakur village collapsed, snapping road linkage between Sarishabari and Madarganj upazilas, our local correspondent reports.
Vehicular movement on Sarishabari-Madarganj route over the Jhenai River under Kamrabad union has already been suspended, causing immense sufferings to the villagers, said Abul Mansur, chairman of Kamrabad union parishad.
The bridge might have collapsed following sand lifting from near it over the years or heavy current in the river caused by flood, said engineer Rakib Hasan in Sarishabari upazila.
Hearing the news, executive engineer of Jamalpur LGED Mukhlesur Rahman visited the spot around noon today and informed higher authorities about the matter.
An expert team of the LGED head office is likely to visit the spot soon and after that the team will decide whether the bridge needs repairing or reconstruction, said engineer Rakib.
Construction work of the bridge started in 2003-2004 fiscal year and was completed in 2006, he added.
