The Essential Restaurant Playlist
Back when I was a child, my parents would often take me and my sisters out for dinner at Sung Palace, a neat restaurant located at the corner of Aurangzeb Road in Mohammadpur. This was in the later part of the '90s and the place had long been demolished to make way for a high-rise. Why do I remember that place so clearly? Well, apart from the prawn balls and wonton, it was the music they played that got most of my attention.
Restaurants in Dhaka not only give us a taste of their respective dishes, they also play songs which can be easily found in mixed albums containing the word 'love' in their titles. Although the music may differ from place to place and have evolved in the course of time, some classics still remain in the background when the fried rice arrives. Here's a look at some of the most commonly played songs at restaurants.
Careless Whisper by George Michael: The essential restaurant soundtrack. For a large part of my life I have referred to it as 'THE restaurant song'. You couldn't have missed it.
Right Here Waiting for You by Richard Marx: The piano intro is more than enough to notify people of its approach. Another track you cannot miss.
Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You by Glenn Madeiros: One of the most romantic songs ever made. Along with the previous two, this song is a must on the restaurant playlist.
You're My Heart, You're My Soul by Modern Talking: This is one of the most popular synth-pop tracks from the '80s. If you have not heard it, your parents definitely have.
Take My Breath Away by Berlin: The soundtrack from the movie 'Top Gun', starring Tom Cruise. An imperative song if you are out with your significant other.
Last Christmas by Wham!: This catchy number is played year-round regardless of its title.
Songbird by Kenny G: Instrumentalist Kenny G and his famous jazz saxophone tunes have found their way into many things, from wedding videos to mega events. People who are familiar with his work will know what I am talking about.
Winds of Change by Scorpions: One of the very few rock songs or ballads to be heard at restaurants. Even so, the distinctive whistling is a treat in itself.
Sacrifice by Elton John: A sorrowful song, nevertheless its beautiful lyrics and Elton John's powerful vocals make it a crowd and restaurant favourite.
Oops! ...I Did It Again by Britney Spears: The peppy record may come as a surprise on this list but it is played at many places. It is quite popular and lead many to lip-sync during the meal.
Apart from the aforementioned tracks and the genres they belong to, there are countless other singles by artists like Celine Dion and John Denver, boy bands Backstreet Boys and Westlife, Justin Bieber or even Pitbull, that are played at food joints across the city. One thing that does not go unnoticed is the fact that romantic songs seem to have the upper hand on these playlists.
“Romantic songs create a soothing effect on the environment, and that makes a meal more enjoyable perhaps. It doesn't matter if it's a family, a couple or a loner -- romantic music has a good effect on them all,” says Romaisa Tabassum, a self-proclaimed foodie.
The next time you go out for a meal, be aware of the music they are playing. Or get your iPods geared up for the occasion if you are eating alone. You may or may not like what's on the menu but if these evergreen tracks are on the list, you can guarantee yourself a good meal nonetheless.
