Locomotive crisis to deepen further

While Bangladesh Railways is already struggling with more than 70 percent of its locomotives being old, it may face further issues as two of its projects, to buy or overhaul 91 locomotives, are going to be cancelled.

As the entire nation still discusses his suspension and then withdrawal of the suspension order, Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) Shafiqul Islam returned to work today and collected Tk 9,000 fine from train passengers travelling without tickets.

In the last three years, the cost of train operation by a private company per passenger has been Tk 2.43 per km while the income was 62 paisa.

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) today expressed deep concern and outrage over suspending of a travelling ticket examiner (TTE) of Pakshey Division of Bangladesh Railways after he fined three passengers who were travelling without tickets, introducing themselves as the relatives of the railway minister.

Railway’s daily passengers expected to double in 2 years

If the ongoing development projects are completed within the stipulated time, then the number of daily train passengers will rise to 5 lakh from 2.5 lakh after two years, said sources at the Railways Ministry.
