Students of 20 schools compete in science contest
Students of 20 schools in Sylhet took part in the science competition “IGNITE” yesterday.
The competition was held at Scholarshome School and College in Sylhet city. The competition had an audience of over 100 enthusiastic students.
The students competed in three categories: Discover Science, Idea Flight and Imagine the Future.
IGNITE held science awareness campaigns weeks ago in three divisions – Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet -- and in those the 20 schools that competed were chosen.
Mumtahina Tasnim Purno from Sylhet Agragami Girls High School won first prize in Imagine the Future, Arup Dey from Hajrat Shahporan High School won first prize in Idea Flight and Syeda Iqina Afzal and her group from the host school received first prize in the remaining category.
Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, managing editor of The Daily Star, Brig Gen (retd) Zubayer Siddiqui, principal of Scholarshome School and College, and Chowdhury Mokammel Wahid, head of computer and science department of Sylhet Metropolitan University, addressed the prize distribution ceremony.
IGNITE, a joint initiative of Grameenphone (GP) and The Daily Star, was initiated to inspire the students of class VI to X towards science education through projects, competition and activities.
IGNITE started its journey on March 22, 2014. Through the science competition, The Daily Star and Grameenphone plan to reach out to over 2 lakh secondary level school students and their teachers and parents in three divisions – Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet.
