Rendezvous with Sobia Ameen
Sobia Ameen, an architect turned baker, has many feathers in her cap. She is a content creator, model and social activist. She was recently featured as a model for the popular Indian fashion designer Masaba Gupta's newest co-ord set. Pictures from this campaign were trending for several days and created quite a stir in the subcontinent's fashion industry.
"This collaboration holds a special place in my heart because my first designer sharee was from House of Masaba. I looked up to the designer for years before finally being a model for her brand," Sobia shared. She completed the shoot at her rooftop as she had an open space as a great backdrop.
The fashion industry has always been dictated by several beauty standards and bringing plus-sized models has been a way to earn the inclusivity point. While shooting for this campaign, Sobia braced herself for the negative comments, but instead, she was overwhelmed by the love and kindness she received. "Putting myself out on a global platform struck a chord with multiple people. In Bangladesh, we still have a long way to go, but the acceptance I received from multiple brands and media industries outside home has truly put my self-worth into perspective," she explained.
Apart from talking about her everyday life and promoting Bangladeshi products, Sobia uses her social media accounts to bust ideal beauty standards. "I am not saying that I am perfect but we cannot be setting unrealistic standards of beauty for future generations or the ones before and with us," she asserted.
While talking about the changes she would like to see in the Bangladeshi fashion industry, she highlighted the importance of promoting our heritage and celebrating our craftsmanship without being influenced by foreign industries. "I have often felt like a token face for the inclusive bracket of brands. I hope we see more people from different parts of our country being represented," she concluded.
