JAAGO Foundation, Urmi Group and Volunteer for Bangladesh arrange vaccine registrations for those in need
The Covid-19 pandemic witnessed several youth-based organisations step into action. From distributing food and groceries among underprivileged communities to raising awareness about the spread of the virus, youth organisations played an active role in helping the nation combat the pandemic. With vaccination drives being conducted across the nation, resuming normal lives finally seems like a possibility.
Bangladesh began its nationwide vaccination drive on February 7 with 3.5 million doses for the first month. Citizens more than 40 years old can take the first dose for the vaccine after completing their online registration on the website, Surokkha. In order to make the procedure more accessible, the youth wing of JAAGO Foundation, with the help of Urmi Group and Volunteer for Bangladesh, are helping out people all over the country. Their week-long campaign, initiated on February 21, has helped more than 50000 people register for the vaccine. 40000 of them have already received the first dose.
Initially, people were skeptical about the vaccination and persuading them to register was one of the major challenges faced by these young volunteers. "It was really difficult to negotiate and convince the people who are comparatively less aware of the vaccination and have no access to internet connections," shared Tanvir Muzaddid, Communication Manager, Partnership and Branding Department, JAAGO Foundation. Additionally, many people did not allow the volunteers to enter their house. "Some people did not have mobile phones and our volunteers had to help the beneficiaries by registering using their own mobile numbers. And finally, they had to accompany them to the hospital to take the vaccine," he further said.
The volunteers conducted door-to-door registrations across eight divisions of the country. They reached out to slum inhabitants in Dhaka and covered several areas which are otherwise inaccessible. Apart from this, the volunteers also organised several awareness building activities including safety and hygiene campaigns. "Overall the campaign was welcomed wholeheartedly and we could successfully help a large number of people register for the vaccine," he concluded while urging people to register for the vaccine.
