Five ways to beat a reading slump
During these months of isolation, many of us have adapted to an indoor routine and found quality reading time where we can get it. However, sometimes, we just cannot get ourselves to start a new book. On World Book and Copyright Day, we take a look at five ways to beat a reading slump.
START WITH SHORT STORIES
Starting with short stories or poems is a great way to get back into reading, as they are quick reads. Reading two short stories or poems everyday before bedtime could do the trick.
TRY LIGHT-HEARTED BOOKS
A fun romance or a light young adult novel could pull you out of a reading slump. These books are easy to connect to. You can get plenty of recommendations for light reads on online book clubs.
SURF THROUGH DIFFERENT GENRES
A reading slump generally arises when you are unable to enjoy books. Browsing through a variety of genres could help you find a new favourite and get you back into reading. While it is not mandatory to step out of your usual reading preferences, a different genre could offer a welcome change. You could also start a virtual buddy-read with a friend, and explore different genres together.
LISTEN TO AUDIOBOOKS
Listening to an audiobook is a great exercise to bring books back into your life. They are convenient, and allow you to multitask. They also capture the essence of hearing stories, beautifully told by narrators.
LEARN TO STOP
Reading needs to be fun. If you are not enjoying a book, learn to stop. You shouldn't force yourself to finish a book fast. Instead, set small, specific reading goals. Make sure you read a few pages every day and cultivate it into a habit.
