Is the government ready to tackle the Omicron variant?
Since the start of the pandemic, coronavirus has mutated many times. Delta variant caused a severe panic for the second time recently. Vaccination, adherence to hygiene rules, and awareness-raising have almost eliminated the dangers of Covid-19. Slowly but surely people had started to go back to normal life. But while the world is recovering, we're facing another Covid-19 outbreak. The new Omicron variant is spreading all over the world. Omicron has been found in the western part of Canada to the eastern part of Australia. The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared Omicron as a "Variant of Concern".
This new variant is highly contagious. At the same time, current vaccines might not be as effective against Omicron. However, extensive research is ongoing.
Director of Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research Prof Dr Tahmina Shirin joins The Daily Star Reporter Moudud Ahmmed Sujan at today's Star Connects to discuss the Omicron variant.
