In absence of authority's action, locals repair embankments
Multiple critical embankments in Koyra upazila are damaged because of Cyclone Yaas' impact, leaving thousands of people waterlogged. As there were no immediate and effective initiatives from the administration, the locals themselves are now working hard to repair those embankments.
The locals complain that these embankments, which are vital for their survival, were already substandard. Now, even though Cyclone Yaas did not hit Bangladesh, the embankments broke down and the homes, agricultural lands of the people of Koyra are now under water. Recently, agitated locals threw mud at their local representative when he went to visit one of the sites.
The Daily Star reporter Dipankar Roy went to Koyra upazila to see the situation after the embankments collapsed. Today's Star on the Spot presents his experience on the condition of that area.
