Masakadza remembers Bangabandhu National Stadium
Before the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium became the 'home of cricket' in Bangladesh, the Bangabandhu National Stadium hosted all cricket matches. The stadium hosted many big events including the mini World Cup (later named ICC Champions Trophy) and it even hosted its first Test back in 1955.
The stadium hosted it's last ODI in 2005 during Zimbabwe's tour of Bangladesh. Two of Zimbabwe's current players, Brendon Taylor and current captain Hamilton Masakadza were with the touring Zimbabwe side back in 2005. While talking to reporters at a press conference today, Masakadza reminisced his first experience of playing in Bangladesh.
"We two were playing in the Bangabandhu Stadium. And the main thing I remember that, the wicket was flat and best batting wicket in the world," he said.
Back then Zimbabwe had a stronger unit although the current crop of players are formidable too and in their last bilateral T20 series in Bangladesh in 2016, they pushed the Tigers, ultimately drawing the series 2-2.
Zimbabwe Cricket have faced a lot of issues in recent times following their suspension from international cricket. Masakadza believed that his team has to focus on what happens on the field as his side take on Bangladesh in the first match of the tri-nation series.
"Obviously a lot of things happened. But that's all are behind the scenes. And at the end of the day, it is cricket and our job is to get on to the field and do the best we can on the field."
Masakdza has already announced that he will be retiring following the series and reminisced on his career. "Yes, definitely. I think it has been a long fruitful career. And obviously there are ups and downs but I thoroughly enjoyed every single moment. I really cherished… those boys really cherished representing the country. If I was given the choice to start over and do it again, I would definitely grab those chance."
