Transport strike called off

Transport workers called off their indefinite transport strike in the district yesterday after a 'fruitful' meeting with police administration. The strike, called protesting arrest of three transport workers earlier, began yesterday morning. According to transport workers' association, Shahzadpur police arrested three staffs of Kabyo Travels, a Dhaka-bound coach, on Friday night as Tk 8 lakh of a passenger 'went missing'. The arrestees are driver Rezaul Karim, supervisor Abdul Momin and helper Shahinur Rahman of the vehicle. On Wednesday, they were sent to Tangail jail.
500 bombs seized

Police recovered 500 crude bombs from an abandoned house in Fulgazi upazila on Wednesday night. Police said on secret information, they conducted a drive at the house belonging to District and Sessions Judge Golam Mortuza Majumdar at Hasanpur village and recovered the bombs. Ahmed Nasir Uddin Mohammad, inspector of Fulgazi police station, said criminals hid the bombs there to commit subversive activities in the upcoming upazila election.
One gets life for murder

A court here on Wednesday sentenced a person to life imprisonment for killing a man in 2009.Judge Munshi Mohammad Moshiar Rahman of the Additional Sessions Judge's Court-1 pronounced the verdict. According to the prosecution, fisherman Jamrul Sheikh of Shakharipara in Ataikula was on way to the Eid congregation on November 28, 2009 when convict Tayez Khan and his seven associates stabbed him dead. Deceased's wife Rabeya Khatun then filed a case with Ataikula police station. Sub-inspector Saiful Islam, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted charge sheet on November 4, 2010. Judge Moshiar Rahman ordered to release the other accused.
Farmer electrocuted

A farmer died from electrocution at Duttabari in the town on Wednesday afternoon. The dead is Najimuddin, 36, son of Surut Ali, of the area. Witnesses said Najimuddin came in contact with a live electric wire while setting electricity line to irrigate his paddy field with shallow pump and died on the spot.
Abducted girl rescued

Police rescued a 12-year-old schoolgirl from Bharaora in Srimangal upazila on Wednesday night, 14 hours after her abduction. They also arrested one Wasim Miah, 28, son of Sahed Miah of Majdipara village in the upazila, in connection with the incident. Md Abdullah, officer in-charge of Srimangal police station, said Wasim abducted the girl on her way to school in the town at 9:00am on Wednesday. He then took the girl to Bharaora Tea Garden in the upazila.
Journo given death threat

A journalist received death threat from a local BNP activist in the town yesterday. The victim is Mahfuz Sazu, district correspondent of News Agency AB News and special correspondent of local daily Nutan Swapna. A general diary was filed with Lalmonirhat Sadar police station in this connection. Swapna said earlier, he also received death threat from Asaduzzaman alias Bhuttu over previous enmity. Contacted, Bhuttu declined to make any comments on the issue. Duty officer of the PS Zahurul Islam said police were investigating the matter.
Youth 'commits suicide'

A youth allegedly committed suicide at Sreenathpur village in Kamalganj upazila yesterday morning. The deceased is Ruman chowdhury, 22, son of Abdur Chowdhury of the village. Locals said he took his life by hanging himself from the ceiling of his room. The reason behind the suicide could not be known immediately, said police.
Six Jamaat-Shibir men held

Police arrested a local Jamaat leader from the jail gate in the town on Wednesday. The arrestee is Shahabuddin, ameer of district unit of Jamaat. He was arrested in four cases under Explosive Substances Act and Special Powers Act. The arrest was made while Shahabuddin was coming out of the jail in five cases. Meanwhile, police arrested five Shibir activists at Yakubia intersection in the town on Tuesday night while they were campaigning in the area in favour of Jamaat female vice-chairman aspirant of Sadar upazila Sajeda Samad. The arrestees are Arif, 20, Shahidul, 21, Ahsan Habib, 20, Halim, 21 and Ferdous, 23, said officer in-charge (DB) of Mizanur Rahman. They were sent to jail on Wednesday evening, said the OC.
