Eid for Everyone

Eid for Everyone

On a bright sunny morning in March, three 11th graders of Rajuk Uttara Model College came up with the idea of launching their own non-profit organisation. The three co-founders Ishmam Afrid Islam, Taufiq-ul-Alam, and Fahrisa Islam stress over the fact that Scars is not like any other youth charity organisation that you will come across.

Although Scars has its principles deeply embedded in mitigating the sorrows of underprivileged people, they strive to value quality over quantity in their endeavors and actions. As they themselves say, "Many non-profits will provide conduct events where they provide food or donate clothes to hundreds of people. While these steps are admirable, all of us at Scars believe that changing lives revolutionarily for the better, be it one at a time, is much more valuable to the society."

Starting from earlier this year, Scars has successfully conducted various fundraisers around the city and events such as "Iftar for Everyone" and "Fit the Poor," where they provided the underprivileged with Iftar and new clothes. However, this Eid-ul-Adha, Scars collaborating with Rajuk College Social Service Club, with the help of its President, Rowdra Ashik, conducted the fundraiser "Eid for Everyone" which was bigger and better. The fundraiser was on the September 8 and 9, with a volunteer force of 180. It was an indelible experience, starting from the volunteers' hard work and dedication, even though they had to endure the torture of our society while raising funds, to getting donations from Zohad Reza Chowdhury, Safa Kabir, and also – most surprisingly – from a rickshaw puller.

During the pre-Eid phase of Eid for Everyone, Scars and RCSSC has distributed Eid goodies and new clothes to a whole area of less fortunate, consisting 150 families. But, their main intention was to make an impact in our society – and so they plan to make benches for underfunded schools; make a tailor store, where abandoned women and widows can come learn and work, and make a living on their own; buy a cow to a broken family, which will give them milk.

Their journey will not be ending just here, though, as some of their future plans include opening a chain of schools for poor kids with quality teachers and work for issues related to feminism, religious tolerance and mobilising unemployed youths. The best part about Scars can be ascertained and experienced when you actually volunteer for it. As Taufiq – co-founder and Managing Director of Scars – puts it, "Even the ones in the executive body of the organization are all young students who volunteer in these events and experience festivity of giving together. I believe fostering these values among youths is as important as helping others in order to ensure a sustainable future for this country."
