National Professor and renowned historian Salahuddin Ahmed was laid to eternal rest at Banani Graveyard with state honour this evening.

The body was taken to the graveyard following a namaz-e-janaza at Dhaka University’s central mosque after Asar prayers.

He was buried around 6:00pm at his father’s grave with state honour, Kader Newaz Khan, a nephew of the late professor, told The Daily Star.

Dr Salahuddin died of old age ailments at 6:30am today at his Banani residence at the age of 92. He left behind three sisters and two brothers, a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.

Dr Salahuddin’s wife died in 2011, leaving no children.

The body of the professor was earlier taken to Dhaka University Jam-e-Mosque premises around 4:20pm from Central Shaheed Minar where people of all walks of life paid their last tributes to him.  

On behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the premier’s military secretary laid a floral wreath in show of respect.

After paying tributes on behalf of the university, DU Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique described the demise as an irreparable loss for the nation.

Meanwhile, Awami League Organising Secretary Bahahuddin Nasim showed the last respect for Prof Salahuddin on behalf of the ruling party.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, Bangla Academy Director General Shamsuzzaman Khan, among others, went to the Shaheed Minar to pay their homage.

The prime minister visited the house around 10:30am and stayed there for 20 minutes, PM’s Assistant Press Secretary Asif Kabir told The Daily Star.

During the visit, she conveyed her sympathy to the bereaved family members and prayed for the salvation of the departed soul. “Dr Salauddin’s death caused an irreparable loss for the nation,” Kabir quoted the prime minister as saying.

Prof Salahuddin was born in 1922 in Faridpur. However, the year of his birth was 1924 according to his academic certificate.

He obtained his BA honours and MA degrees from the Calcutta University and subsequently AM and PhD degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, USA and University of London, UK.

His teaching career began in 1948 when he joined the Jagannath College, Dhaka as a lecturer in history.

Subsequently he served as lecturer and professor of history at the Rajshahi University, and later as professor of history at the Jahangirnagar and Dhaka Universities.
