AL conspiring to thwart BNP’s victory in city polls: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today alleged that the government is hatching a plan to hinder the victories of his party-nominated candidates in the upcoming Dhaka north and south city corporation elections scheduled for February 1.

“Awami League has become bankrupt politically. Now it’s conspiring to hinder BNP’s victories in the two city polls in many ways,” Fakhrul said.

The BNP leader came up with the allegation while talking to reporters after offering prayers at the grave of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s younger son Arafat Rahman Koko at Banani Graveyardon his fifth death anniversary.

Fakhrul said BNP nominated candidates are being attacked physically in a bid to keep them away from the electoral race.

Claiming that there has been a mass wave in favour of BNP’s ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ electoral symbol, Fakhrul said, “No one will be able to prevent the victory of our mayoral candidates Tabith Awal and Ishraque Hossain.”

BNP’s two mayoral candidates, and also the party’s senior leaders, were present there.

Later at the Banani Graveyard, the two mayoral candidates also offered prayers at the grave of Annisul Huq, the late mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

Annisul was elected DNCC mayor on Awami League’s ticket in April 2015, defeating Tabith Awal.
