Pioneer of the country’s insurance sector M Shamsul Alam passes away

M Shamsul Alam, one of the pioneers of the country's insurance sector, breathed his last on May 20 at the age of 83.

Shamsul's demise is mourned by thousands of well-wishers, friends and family members.

His wife Chobi Alam, daughters Samira Alam, Sadia Alam, Shakera Alam Talpur, sons-in-law Joy Samad, Asanka Kinigama and Mir Faisal Talpur, and his two grandsons Ayaan and Arvin send prayers for his eternal peace in heaven.

Alam has a long list of credentials under his belt: associateship of the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK), chartered insurer, former chairman of Shadharan Bima Corporation (1973-1986) and Jibon Bima Corporation (1986-1987), former chairman of Asian Reinsurance Corporation (Bangkok), founder and managing director of Reliance Insurance Ltd and founder president of Baridhara Cosmopolitan Club Ltd.

Born in Pabna, Shamsul Alam joined the then Pakistan Insurance Corporation in 1960 after post-graduation.  He was one of the defining forces in shaping the insurance sector of Bangladesh.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the insurance sector of the country, Shamsul was awarded the Bima Padak by the prime minister on March 1, 2020.
