Patient under police guard
Guarded by eight policemen, patient Abid Hossain Akash was lying on his bed at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), while his attendant brother was released by cops yesterday.
Akhtar Hossain took his younger brother Abid, a class X student at Rajshahi Model School and College, to the RMCH on the night of April 20. The schoolboy was suffering from what doctors said was “anxiety disorder”.
The RMCH authorities got hold of Akhtar after some interns beat him up for allegedly slapping one of their colleagues and turned him over to the police. Since then Akhtar had been in police custody.
The Daily Star found that the patient's attendant mistakenly took the treatment of his brother to be an act of torture and allegedly assaulted an intern at the hospital.
The incident snowballed as interns from all 35 wards at the 530-bed hospital started chasing and beating up attendants of patients. At one stage, the interns confronted journalists with a shotgun and sticks snatched from police.
Contacted, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mahbubur Rahman denied arresting Akhter.
“We took him in our custody to facilitate the ongoing probe by the hospital authorities,” mentioned Mahbub, adding that Akhtar was released on yesterday evening.
