Outlaw killed in 'gunfight'
An outlawed party leader was killed and two Rab members were injured in a “gunfight” between Rab and outlaws in the district's Ishwardi upazila yesterday afternoon.
The dead, Hamidur Rahman alias Hamidur, 35, was the second-in-command of a faction of Sarbahara Party. He was the son of Dilbar Sheikh of Khodairpur village in Sadar upazila.
Quoting sources in Pabna Rab camp, Biman Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Ishwardi Police Station, said Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members nabbed Hamidur from his house around 2:30pm.
As per his confessional statement, they along with Hamidur went to Hathatpara village around 5:30pm for recovering firearms.
When the Rab members came close to a sugarcane field of the village, Hamidur's aides opened fire. The Rab members returned fire, triggering a “gunfight” between the Sarbahara operatives and the Rab members.
Hamidur was shot dead on the spot. His cohorts managed to flee the scene.
Two Rab members were hit by bullets. They have been undergoing treatment at Pabna Medical College Hospital, Biman said.
Rab also recovered a pistol and two bullets from the spot.
Hamidur was an accused in several criminal cases, the police official added.
