21 killed in roof collapse during funeral in India

Twenty-one people were killed and at least 20 others injured when the roof of a shelter at a cremation ground collapsed in Muradnagar district of Uttar Pradesh in India today.

The roof collapsed on several people who were taking shelter from heavy rain. Most of them relatives of a man who was being cremated at the time.

Rescue workers sifted through the rubble for hours to ensure no more victims are trapped there, our New Delhi correspondent reports quoting police.

A team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was sent to the spot in Muradnagar's Ukhlarsi village.

The injured were admitted to different hospitals, officials said adding that the number of wounded could be higher as some others were taken away from the site by their relatives.
