Nothing wrong
Prime Minister's Political Affairs Adviser HT Imam yesterday said he had not done or said anything that might harm the government's image or make it feel embarrassed, and that there was no question of repenting.
Talking to BBC Bangla, he also claimed his remarks at the Chhatra League programme at Dhaka University on Wednesday were misinterpreted intentionally.
He then went on to say that the prime minister had much confidence in him and that she was not unhappy with him for the comments.
The adviser has been drawing a lot of flak for assuring the BCL men of help once they pass the BCS written exams. He also said having ruling party men in the administration helped with the conduct of January 5 polls. His remarks have irked many in the government and the party as well.
Imam, also a member of the Awami League advisory council, said he would explain his position through a press conference at the AL president's political office in Dhanmondi today. He was doing this on advice from the prime minister.
Meanwhile, AL sources said the adviser tried to meet the prime minister yesterday but failed.
About his assurance to BCL men, Imam told BBC Bangla last night that he had only meant to say how they should prepare for the BCS viva voce.
“If they [BCL men] do well in the written exams, I call them and speak about Bangladesh affairs, international situation and what kind of questions may come in the viva. Having knowledge won't be the only qualification. Expressions of personality, how to enter the viva [room] and give salam, and speak … everything has to be taught ...”
To another query, Imam said if the prime minister had been unhappy with him, she would have called him.
“The prime minister did not say anything to me, rather she advised me to clarify the issues before the press,” Imam said adding that he had the courage to face the media.
He also said there was no doubt that a certain quarter in the party was working against him.
