The Vatican has appointed Bishop Patrick D Rozario CSC as the archbishop of Dhaka, making him the chief of the Catholic Church in Bangladesh.
Pope Benedict XVI made the appointment as he accepted the retirement of Archbishop Paulinus Costa on October 22, said a press release of Christian Communications Centre in the city.
The appointment is done as per the Code of Canon Law, rule of the Catholic Church.
Born on October 1, 1972 in Barisal, Archbishop Patrick D Rozario was ordained a priest then. He was made the bishop of Rajshahi Diocese in 1990, transferred to Chittagong Diocese in 1995. Before becoming the archbishop, he worked as the successor archbishop of Dhaka since November 25, 2010.
There are now seven dioceses in the country. Diocese is a geographic area of the Catholics and a bishop is responsible for each diocese. Bishop of the capital of a country is called the archbishop.
