The committee formed to investigate the death of Dhaka University student Abubakar Siddique started its enquiry yesterday morning.
Siddique was injured during a factional clash of Bangladesh Chhatra League at Sir AF Rahman Hall on February 2 and died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital the following day.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal has called a strike at Dhaka University today protesting Siddique's death.
DU Exam Controller Bahalul Haque said all the exams would be held on schedule.
Meanwhile, different student organisations including Pragatishil Chhatra Jote, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Bangladesh Chhatra Federation and general students brought out protest processions on the campus and held rallies.
The speakers at the rallies demanded resignation of DU Proctor KM Shafiul Islam and blasted Home Minister Sahara Khatun for her remark on circumstances leading to Siddique's death.
Five members of the nine-member committee led by its convener Harun-or-Rashid went to AF Rahman Hall for investigation at around 11:40am.
They visited different rooms of the dormitory, including room no-404 where Siddique had been residing and talked to the resident students of the hall.
Siddique's roommate Rezaul Karim handed over three broken parts of a teargas shell to the committee members.
The members asked the students to submit their written or verbal depositions before the committee.
Earlier, the committee held its first meeting at the university yesterday morning.
Harun-or-Rashid who presided over the meeting said, “We will hopefully submit the report within 15 workdays.”
The DU syndicate, the highest decision making body, formed the nine-member committee, which includes Proctor KM Saiful Islam Khan, DU Teachers Association (Duta) President Khondoker Bazlul Haque, former Duta president Anwar Hossain and Prof Rahmatullah.
AL LEADERS MEET BCL MEN
Two organising secretaries of the ruling Awami League held a closed-door meeting with Chhatra League top brass last night.
Jahangir Kabir Nanak and BM Mozammel Haque, assigned to look after the student body associated with the ruling party, met the BCL leaders against a backdrop of factional fights in educational institutions including Dhaka University.
Held at Juba League headquarters on Bangabandhu Avenue, the meeting began at around 7:00pm and lasted for around three and a half hours.
Nanak and Mozammel enquired the BCL leaders about the recent clash that left a student killed at Sir AF Rahman Hall of DU.
They also wanted to know about BCL men's involvement in illegal trade over college admissions, a Chhatra League leader told The Daily Star after the meeting.
BCL President Mahmud Hasan Ripon, General Secretary Mahfuzul Haider Chowdhury Roton, DU unit President Sohel Rana Tipu and General Secretary Sazzad Sakib Badsha were among those present.
Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked her party's three organising secretaries--Nanak, Mozammel and Ahmad Hossain--to look into what was wrong with the student body.
Meanwhile, at least six crackers were exploded and 10 rounds of bullets shot in TSC area on the DU campus at around 10:30pm.
