College student killed as van hits his motorcycle in Bangla Motor

A college student died early today after a covered van hit his motorcycle at the Bangla Motor area in Dhaka.

The victim, Arshad Ahmed Sarkar, 18, was a student of Dhanmondi Ideal School and College, said his friend and police.

The accident occurred around 4:30am when Arshad was riding his motorcycle through the Bangla Motor intersection.

After being hit by the van, the victim fell from the motorcycle and was severely injured, said Shahidul Hasan, sub-inspector of Hatirjheel Police Station.

Police rescued Arshad and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead. The van fled the scene immediately after the crash, the SI added.

"We are reviewing nearby CCTV footage to identify the vehicle," the police official said.

Arshad's friend Ismail Hossain Ishan said Arshad had left his home in Lalbagh around 1:00am, telling his family he was going on a night trip to Mawa with friends.

"We woke up to the news that he had died in a road accident," he said.

The victim's body is being handed over to his family without post-mortem upon their request, police said.
