Road accidents kill 6 in 5 districts

At least six people, including a motorcyclist, were killed in separate road accidents in Chandpur, Netrokona, Habiganj, Gopalganj and Jashore last night and today

 

At least six people, including a motorcyclist, were killed in separate road accidents in Chandpur, Netrokona, Habiganj, Gopalganj and Jashore last night and today.

Of them, two persons were killed in Chandpur and one each killed in Netrokona, Habiganj, Gopalganj and Jashore districts.

The deceased were identified as Samudra Mal, 25; Md Isha, 30; Mofazzal Hossain, 40; Taukir Hasan; Robi Sarkar, 60; and Omar Faruk, 10.

In Chandpur, two people died in an accident that took place around 11:45pm last night in front of the deputy commissioner's office in Chairman Ghat area, when a battery-run auto-rickshaw hit a motorcycle.

The deceased were identified as Samudra Mal, 25, who was riding the motorcycle; and Md Isha, 30, the driver of the battery-powered rickshaw.

The two were rushed to Chandpur Government General Hospital, where on-duty doctor Belayet Hossain declared both dead.

Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Bahar Mia said that both vehicles involved in the accident were seized.

Three other people were injured during the incident, the OC said.

In Netrokona, a head-on collision between two CNG-run autorickshaws took place in Barhatta upazila, leaving one driver, Mofazzal Hossain, 40, dead and at least six passengers seriously injured.

The injured have been sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, said Md Kamrul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Barhatta Police Station.

The accident occurred around 11:00pm yesterday at Sholpo Dashal in Barhatta upazila.

Priyanka Das, physician at Barhatta Upazila Health Complex, said, "Seven injured persons were brought to the hospital at night. Among them, Mofazzal Hossain was declared dead. The rest were referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital due to their critical injuries."

In Habiganj, the death toll rose to three in an accident that took place yesterday involving two buses in Bahubal upazila. Two people had died in the accident yesterday.

A person named Taukir Hasan, who suffered injuries in the accident, died at the 250-bed Habiganj District Sadar Hospital early today.

ATM Mahmudul Haque, OC of Shayestaganj Highway Police Station, confirmed the development and said two other persons, including one of the bus drivers, died on the spot and at least 20 people were injured in the incident around 2:30pm yesterday.

In Gopalganj, a motorcyclist died on the spot and another sustained injuries after a Tekerhat-bound bus of Riyad Paribahan from Gopalganj hit the motorcycle from behind near Satpara Bus Stand in Gopalganj's Sadar upazila around this noon, said Mir Md Sajedur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Gopalganj, quoting locals.

The deceased was identified as Robi Sarkar, 60, a resident of Bakpura village in Bhavrashur union under Muksudpur upazila. He owned a furniture business in the Gohata area of Gopalganj town.

The injured Mintu was rushed to the Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital for treatment, said the OC.

Following the death, an angry mob torched the bus responsible for the collision. Firefighters reached the spot and, with the help of locals, brought the blaze under control. added the OC.

Traffic on the road remained suspended for about an hour following the incident.

In Jashore, a schoolboy was killed after being run over by a soil-laden tractor in Baropota area of Sharsha upazila last night.

The deceased, Omar Faruk, 10, was a fifth-grade student at Krishnapur Government Primary School. He was the son of Abdullah Mondol of Krishnapur village under Putkhali Union of Benapole Port Police Station.

The tragic accident occurred around 8:00pm near Mallik Mor at Mohishadangga village, while Omar was returning home on a bicycle from his grandparents' house in Shikri village, said his father Abdullah Mondol.

Benapole Port Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Russel Mia confirmed the accident.
