India’s import ban an opportunity for self-reliance: Asif Mahmud

India's recent ban on the import of certain goods from Bangladesh could become a turning point for greater self-reliance in the country, said Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Speaking to reporters in Savar this noon after attending the Youth Assembly 2025 at the National Youth Development Institute as chief guest, he said although the ban may cause short-term disruptions, it presents a long-term opportunity.
"Our honourable commerce adviser has already said India may suffer more from this move since its exports to Bangladesh are higher. Of course, this was a sudden decision, and we'll face some challenges in the interim. But ultimately, it opens the door for self-reliance," Asif said.
On the ongoing movement demanding the appointment of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as mayor, the adviser said, "When the government works, the government works as a body, no one has the opportunity to take any decision here personally, especially such a big decision, there is no reason to think that I am taking it as a single person."
"Legal complications are involved, and many matters are pending in court," he added.
He said the law ministry had been consulted to resolve the complexities.
"We are awaiting their opinion. A hearing on the writ petition related to this issue is scheduled for today. Since the case is subjudice, it would be inappropriate to comment further," he added.
Asif Mahmud also pointed out that the Local Government Division was not a party to the original case and the court's verdict had not included any directive to the division.
