At least 20-25 students of Rajshahi University's accounting and information systems (AIS) department were ragged allegedly by six of their seniors on the campus on Saturday.

Two of the victims, Abdullah Sheikh and Mezbaha Dewan, of the department's 2023–24 session, filed a complaint with the university proctor yesterday.

The incident took place around 6:30pm on the rooftop of the Rabindranath Tagore Academic Building.

According to complaint, 20-25 students from their batch were subjected to ragging by six seniors of the same department in the presence of 25-30 other senior students.

In the complaint, they said they were summoned to the rooftop and inflicted mental torture and verbally abused for nearly five hours.

The accused are Mokminul Islam Chowdhury, Golam Rabbi, Mahbub Hossain, Mehedi Hasan Mithu, Shah Poran, and Shahadat Hossain -- students of the 2022–23 session of AIS department.

One of the accused, Golam Rabbi, said, "We were celebrating our recent victory of BBA freshers tournament. As a part of this we had a celebration party with our juniors. No incident of ragging nor harassment happened during this time."

Another accused Mahbub Hossain said there was no intention of ragging. "We were just celebrating our victory with our juniors."

RU Proctor Mahbubor Rahman said, "I got a written complaint against a batch of AIS and allegations against some specific individuals in this incident."

They primarily suspect the incident of ragging to be true, he said, adding, "We will take action after investigation."
