Workers of a garment factory blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur for two hours today demanding arrears for the month of March and bonus for the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrated last month.

More than 300 workers of HDF garment factory took position on the highway at Jaina Bazar in Sreepur, halting vehicular movement around 10:30am.

However, the police and the army personnel rushed to the scene and managed to convince the workers to leave the highway around 12:30pm, said Maona Highway Police Station's Officer-in-charge Ayub Ali.

Currently, the joint forces and industrial police were holding a discussion with the protesting workers inside the factory, OC Ayub Ali said in the afternoon.

The owner and officials of the HDF factory could not be reached despite this correspondent attempted several times.

Industrial Police Inspector Abdul Latif Khan said, "We are holding talks with the factory workers over their demands. But people from the factory owner's side are not picking up our calls. We are trying to communicate with them."
