Extortionists shot a mason at Rampura in the city yesterday as the owner of an under-construction building where he works refused to pay extortion to the criminals.
The mason identified as Nazrul Islam, 40, told journalists at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) that a gang of criminals asked him and his three co-workers to stop work at the building and shot in his left leg at around 1:30pm.
Nazrul said he just heard that the extortionists had demanded tolls earlier from the house owner.
Khilgaon police could not arrest anyone in this regard as of 8:30pm.
