IPDC Ogroj: Nasiruddin Yousuff Bacchu recalls his heroic and modest life

Nasiruddin Yousuff Bacchu was the distinguished guest on the Seventeenth Episode of IPDC Ogroj. He talked about his passionate youth dedicated towards gaining the independence for the country and his post-war life of rebuilding the cultural backbone of the nation. The session was moderated by venerated banker Anis A. Khan.

Nasiruddin Yousuff Bacchu is one of the co-founders of Dhaka Theater. He is also a famed war veteran of our Liberation War. He is a renowned director with a National Film Award for Best Director to his name for his film "Guerilla". He was also awarded the prestigious "Eksuhey Padak" for his distinguished work in the cultural sector of our country in 2010.

Born on 15th April 1950, in Lalbagh, Dhaka, He talked about his humble beginnings with his father being a British civil servant and his mother being the student of a distinguished educational institution. He briefly talked about his siblings and the story of one his late sisters.

"One of my sisters, who was in school at that time, helped me make the flag of independence, with the map of our country signified in yellow within the red circle. I later handed it over to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibar Rahman, at his home on 23rd March, 1971. Two of my elder brothers were also in the forefront of the language movement".

He also talked about his experience of being affected with Covid-19. He shared how scary and horrifying it can be when affected by it. Nevertheless, he kept himself engaged and tried to remain strong during this period. He also conveyed his thanks to everyone who notified the public about his condition and everyone who prayed for him during this time and urged the public to adhere to the advices of doctors and health experts.

In the next segment, he recalled his time during the Liberation War of independence. He conversed about the chain of events that started the war of independence and his experience as a youth who was engulfed in this conflict and his burning passion of defending his homeland and gain the independence that they desperately needed. He talked about picking up the mantle of protest and chanting slogans as a defiance of the government they did not support. He also conveyed remorse over the destruction that was caused during that time and how they felt helpless at one moment in time.

"I lead a number of missions around Dhaka as a part of the Crack Platoon during the Liberation War. A lot of my brothers in arms were captured during this time, which deeply saddened me". He continued his conversation with the horrifying stories about the Birangona women, whose sacrifice will never be forgotten. He also mentioned his time in India and the stories that revolved around him getting trained to take on bigger foes of the Pakistan Forces.

An amazing slideshow of Liberation War was presented, followed by him saying, "I am really honored and feeling proud that today's young generation are so interested about the Liberation War and its legacy in the birth of our nation. It inspires me to live a little longer to spread these stories to even more youths of these nation".

He talked about his time as a producer in Bangladesh Television, where he produced and directed hundreds of contents for the television network. He previously worked as an actor in Dhaka University and co-founded Dhaka Theater as well. He talked about restructuring the cultural expressions through Stage-plays and put forth his love for producing stories revolving around fiction.

"I was present during the protest against President Ershad as well, where I had to quit my national job to continue fighting for the freedom this country deserves", He said.

He ended this wonderful episode with some words for the future generation of this nation.

 "There's this quote from a Russian ballerina who said her talent was 1% and 99% of it was hard-work. I have acted in global stage; my films have garnered international acclaim and most of it was due to hard work. There's no substitute to hard work and you should always keep working towards your dreams and passion. Moreover, no person can live alone in the society. Give yourself and your time to the betterment of this society. Do volunteer work, charity work to help the people in need and help grow your country to new heights. If others remain safe and happy, you will remain safe and happy. You have to create a equal society, where we live together regardless of religion, race and any other factors that may divide us. Remove hate from your heart and unite this country. Keep the bond of your family through thick and thin as well".
