Indian fighters involved in 1971 Liberation War visit Tangail

A group of Indian fighters, who took part in the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971, visited Tangail today.

The valiant Indian fighters came to the district today on occasion of the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence, reports our Tangail correspondent.

The team of Indian troops visited Baniafair area of the district's Kalihati upazila where the Indian paratroopers had landed on December 11, 1971 during the Liberation War.

During the visit, two local valiant freedom fighters met with the visiting 68-member Indian delegation and later took part in the commemoration, said Kalihati Police Station officer-in-charge Sawgatul Alam, who was present at the time.

The 68-member delegation includes 30 retired Indian army personnel, who had taken part in the Liberation War in 1971, and wives of 23 army personnel out of the 30.

Besides, six current Indian Army officers and wives of five officers were among the delegation while Major General Narayan Shankar (Rtd) led it, said OC Sawgatul.

Earlier, the visitors' team arrived at Shaheed Salahuddin Cantonment in Ghatail on a Bangladesh Air Force helicopter when General Officers Commandant (GOC) of 19th Infantry Division Ghatail Area Commander Major General Syed Tareq Hossain and his wife welcomed them.

At the end of the visit, the delegation returned to Dhaka by helicopter from the cantonment this afternoon, added the police official.
