Law enforcers raided the office of Azmeri Osman in Narayanganj and detained two of his associates early today in connection with a case filed for extortion and beating a businessman.

The arrestees were identified as President of Narayanganj District Students Society Shahadat Hosen Rupu, 32, and Mokhlesur Rahman, 35, Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station, told our Narayanganj correspondent.

A joint team of Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station, Fatullah Model Police Station and Detective Branch of police in the district conducted the raid at the office on Allama Iqbal Road around 12:15am, police and witnesses said.

Azmeri Osman is the son of former MP of Narayanganj-5 AKM Nasim Osman and nephew of current MP of Narayanganj-5 Selim Osman and Narayanganj-4 Shamim Osman.

After making the arrests and talking with the family members of Azmeri Osman, the law enforcers left the scene around 12:45am, police said.

The raid was conducted as a result of a case filed against Azmeri Osman and his associates over the charges of demanding extortion and beating a businessman in the area on Thursday night, the OC added.

Earlier in March 2014, Rab told media that they found involvement of Azmeri and his 11 associates in Taqi’s murder.

Taqi, 17, son of Rafiur Rabbi, a cultural activist and the convener of Narayanganj Gonojagoron Mancha, was abducted on March 6, 2013 and found dead in the Shitalakkhya river two days later.

People, including the victim’s father, have since then blamed the members of Shamim Osman’s family in the city for the murder.

Eight of the accused in the case filed over the sensational murder incident have been absconding, while five others have been arrested. Two of the arrestees – Yusuf Hossain Liton and Sultan Shawkat – gave confessional statements.

The murder of the 17-year-old high school graduate has been much discussed for the alleged involvement of family members of ruling party MP Shamim Osman.

In June 2013, Rab-11 arrested some “aides” of the Osman family and raided Azmeri Osman’s office in Narayanganj city in August 2013, and found evidence of torture there.
