CU BCL men beat up student over Shibir suspicion

Some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) reportedly beat up a student at Chittagong University (CU) yesterday, suspecting him to be an activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir.

The victim, a fourth-year student of Islamic Studies department, was given primary treatment at university medical centre, said sources.

He alleged that some activists of shuttle-train compartment based BCL group “Sixty-nine” swooped on him when he was at Arts Faculty tea stall for breakfast at around 11am.

“They beat me up indiscriminately for sharing an Islamic post on my personal Facebook account in 2013,” he said.

He and his friends said that he was never involved in any kind of politics.

Police and university's proctorial body rushed to the spot, rescued him and sent him to the medical centre.

Dr Abu Tayub, chief medical officer of CU medical centre said they gave him primary treatment and referred him to Chittagong Medical College Hospital as he has a serious head injury.

Contacted, Sixty-nine group leader Iqbal Tipu claimed that the victim had shared posts that favour Islami Chhatra Shibir from his Facebook account several times.

“We have screenshots as proof,” he added.
