NHRC body visit spot

The three-member probe body, formed by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), yesterday visited Swanirbhar Bazar area in Sadar upazila where seven people were killed in separate attacks on August 18.

During their visit, the committee led by Nurun Nahar Osmani, member of NHRC, talked to the government officials, leaders of different organisations and local people.

The other members of the body are Banchita Chakma and M Rabiul Islam.

Meanwhile, activists of United Peoples Democratic Front backed Hill Students' Council, led by its General Secretary Amal Tripura, met the committee members and handed over a written statement to them to press home their four-point demand.

Their demands include forming a judicial inquiry committee, ensuring the attackers' immediate arrest and punishment, punishment of police and BGB personnel for failing to resist the attackers and financial compensation for the family members of the deceased.

Nurun Nahar Osmani, convenor of the probe body, declined to make any comment in this regard and said they will submit the probe report to NHRC first and then the chairman of the commission will brief the media personnel.

On August 18, seven people were killed in separate attacks when miscreants opened fire in a marketplace and a subsequent protest rally following the attacks.
