Anti-narcotics drive in Dhaka's Mirpur and Pabna

Police yesterday raided the Bihari camps in Dhaka's Mirpur and detained 27 persons in accusation of selling and taking drugs.

A team of police from Mirpur Division, Detective Branch (DB) and Public Order Management (POM) raided the Bihari camps from around 10:30am that continued until 1:00pm, Dadon Fakir, officer-in-charge of Pallabi Police Station, told The Daily Star.

The major camps they raided include Rahamat, Irani, Millat, Muslim and other places in the area, the OC said. He said they raided around 20 to 21 camps in Mirpur-10 and Mirpur-11.

The OC said they conducted the raids to create awareness against narcotics among people.

When this correspondent visited Rahamat Camp during the raid, some residents said police sought their cooperation so that no innocent person gets arrested.

During the raids, police also recovered around 2,110 yaba tablets, 6kg of cannabis, 124 bottles of local liquor from the camps, the OC added.

Meanwhile, our Pabna Correspondent reports, although drug peddlers are on the run due to the continuous drive of the law enforcers, the drug trade could not be stopped. Now, drug dealers have changed their strategy of drug transportation.

Sirajganj police on Friday night recovered 4,800 yaba pills from cosmetics packets being sent through a courier service, and arrested two people.

Officer-in-Charge of Sirajganj Detective Branch (DB) of police, Md Mozaharul Islam, said “key drug trader” Moniruzzaman Labu of Sirajganj, who brings yaba pills from Chittagong through the courier service, is on the run.

Acting on a tip-off, Sirajganj DB police raided Sundarban Courier Service at about 8:00pm on Friday. Two were arrested when they went to the courier service for taking delivery of the drug, he said.

The arrestees Md Al Amin, 45, of village Chak-Kobadaspur, and Abdul Jalil, 35 of village Mirpur, in the district were sent to jail yesterday.

A packet full of 24 cosmetic boxes -- each containing 200 yaba pills -- was seized from their possession, the OC said.

He added that the arrestees claimed they were involved with Moniruzzaman Labu.

A case was filed against Labu and his associates with Sirajganj Sadar Police Station.
