Survived, but armless

A worker of a company contracted by the Bangladesh Railway lost one of his hands when a running train hit him in Akkelpur upazila of Joypurhat on Friday.

The victim, Sekendar Ali, 35, son of Shaharul Islam of Gaibandha's Saghata upazila, also a worker of the said company Max Construction, is undergoing treatment at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital (SZMC) in Bogra.

Site supervisor Abdus Sabur said about 70 workers of Max Construction, who were hired to install slippers under the rail tracks, have been residing in small tents close to the rail tracks.

Quoting witnesses, Sabur said the accident occurred when the Khulna-bound Rocket Mail train hit Senkendar as he came out of his tent after having lunch around 2:00pm on Friday, leaving him with the severed right hand.

Fellow workers rescued him in critical condition and took him to Akkelpur Upazila Health Complex, he said.

As Sekendar's condition was deteriorating due to profuse bleeding he was later shifted to SZMC in Bogra for better treatment, the supervisor added.
