Two sisters drown in Teesta
Two sisters drowned in the Teesta river in Kaunia upazila of Rangpur yesterday.
They were Jesmin Akter, 10, and Sumaiya Akter, 7, daughters of Idris Ali of Dalalhat village under Kaunia upazila, and Class III and Class I students, respectively, of Sheikhpara Government Primary School in the upazila.
According to their family members, the sisters went to the Teesta river to take bath at around 1:30pm. Suddenly, Sumaiya went into a hole created by illegal sand lifting. Seeing that, Jesmin tried to save her sister, but she also drowned.
Villagers recovered the bodies at around 3:00pm.
Haragachh Municipality Councillor Mamunur Rashid blamed the illegal sand lifters for the death of the sisters.
