232 accused charged after five years
The Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court here yesterday framed charge against 232 people including a former Jamaat lawmaker for killing four police constables at Bamondanga of Sundarganj upazila five years ago.
“After hearing, Judge Ali Ahmed framed charge against 232 people out of charge-sheeted 235 ones in the case. Three other accused died earlier,” said Shafiqul Islam Shafi, public prosecutor (PP) of Gaibandha District and Sessions Judge's Court.
Former Jamaat lawmaker Saleh Md Abdul Aziz, Palashbari Upazila Parishad Chairman Nazrul Islam Lebu, Gaibandha Sadar Upazila Parishad chairman and Jamaat's district Secretary Abdul Karim are among the accused included with the framing charge, he added.
On February 28 in 2013, after the pronouncement of the verdict of death sentence against war criminal Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, supporters, Jamaat-Shibir activists started massive violence in Sundarganj upazila. They vandalised shops and government properties at Bamondanga rail station and set fire to rail tracks. They attacked Bamondanga government railway police (GRP) outpost and killed four on-duty police constables there.
The victim policemen were Tozammel Hossain, Bablu Mia, Hazrat Ali and Khaja Nazimuddin.
After the incident, Sub-Inspector Abu Hanif filed a case against 89 people by name and 2500 other unnamed ones with Sundarganj Police Station.
On September 21 in 2014, Investigation Officer Jalaluddin submitted charge sheet before the court against 235 people in this case. Of the accused, 223 are now on bail, seven are absconding, two in jail, and the three others have died, said PP Shafiqul Islam.
Trial of the case will start soon although the charge was framed after a long time, he added.
