Humiliated, mother takes her own life

Tolerance is something that is apparently synonymous with a mother, who has to endure a lot of pain to rear a child, and who is perhaps the one and only person to accept the child despite all of his or her faults.

But what happens when the humiliation by the very child she gave birth to leads her to the point of no return?

Failing to bear the son's mistreatment -- both physically and mentally, a mother -- the very epitome of patience -- took her own life in Gangapara upazila of Rangpur on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased is Kalpana Begum, 50, wife of Yakub Ali of Bagpur-Chottapara village in the upazila. 

Quoting locals, police said the daughter of Kalpana fell in love with a local youth, and they have got married recently without taking the consent of their families. 

But Polash, 20, son of Kalpana, could not accept his sister's marriage. Since then, he had been torturing his mother -- both physically and mentally -- alleging that her sister had been spoiled due to his mother, said police.  

On Saturday noon, Polash allegedly beat up and verbally abused his mother in front of villagers over the issue. 

Humiliated, the mother went to her room, locked the door inside and took poison. Finding no response from inside for long, villagers broke open the door and discovered her dead in the afternoon.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Rangpur Medical College morgue for an autopsy.

The body was handed over to the family yesterday afternoon, said police. 

An unnatural death case was filed. Polash remained absconding after the incident.

Moshiur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gangachara Police Station, said police would take action if the family files a written complaint.

As of filing of this report on yesterday evening, no case was filed.
