One held with 3.27 lakh Saudi riyals at Dhaka airport

Customs intelligence arrested a person with 3.27 lakh Saudi riyals, equivalent to Tk 72.62 lakh, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital early yesterday.

Tipped off, the officials detained Sobhan Sheikh, a resident of Munshiganj, after he reached the airport by a Malaysian flight and recovered the illegal money, hidden inside his shoes and in different parts of the body, said Moinul Khan, director general of customs intelligence.

Moinul said, “Sobhan was carrying the foreign currency illegally to purchase gold. He admitted to have smuggled gold at least four times before which he sold in Tantibazar.”

Sobhan returned to Malaysia just a few days back on Thursday but was sent back to Bangladesh by the Malaysian immigration due to unknown reasons, he added.

Meanwhile, Chittagong customs intelligence officials yesterday detained a passenger of Dubai flight, Ali Akbar, 47, of Hathazari upazila, with 27 gold bars, weighing 3kg, hidden inside his luggage at Shah Amanat International Airport.
